From 19 to 25 of October 2017, Fair Trade Lebanon (FTL) was on a business trip in Tunisia, in the framework of the partnership agreement signed last July with Fairtrade Africa & Middle East. The aim of the trip was to visit the Fairtrade-certified Tunisian producers and evaluate their needs in training and technical support. Lamia Karaki, Technical Food Consultant, and Benoit Berger, Project Director, visited five producer groups, spread between Gabes, Kebili, Hazoue (Tozeur) and Majel Bel Abbes (Kasserine). These groups produce dates, cherry tomatoes, almonds and olive oil.
This business trip was also an opportunity to participate in the “2nd National Conference of Fair Trade in Tunisia” organized by the NGO ENDA Inter-Arab on October 20th. During this conference, the local label El Kahina was presented to the participants, while Benoit Berger presented the Lebanese experience in the field of Fair Trade, with particular focus on the development of the TEQ label (Transparency, Ethics, Quality).
These multiple encounters have opened up collaboration opportunities between Fair Trade actors from both countries. Whether through experience sharing, common events organization, access to new markets with South-South commercial relations or through the joint promotion of products from the South of the Mediterranean towards European countries.
